Cyclical tree maintenance
As part of
the Town of Rosemère’s urban forest management plan, a forward-looking
initiative that falls under the climate change and biodiversity component
of the 2024–2030 strategic plan, a routine maintenance program has been
implemented and efforts are underway to update the inventory of public trees in
the community.
Accordingly,
a team of professional arborists will inspect and maintain about 20% of the
trees found on public property every year on a cyclical basis. Most of the
maintenance work will involve tree pruning or removal.
Pruning
Pruning is
the removal of select branches on a tree to guide growth and/or limit size and
shape. There are several types of pruning:
Pruning
for safety reasons:
Removal of dead, diseased, damaged or weak branches that are a potential hazard
to people or property.
Pruning
for disease management: Removal of branches to prevent the spread of disease or infestation
that, left unchecked, could kill the tree.
Structural
pruning: Selective
removal of branches that are damaged or that interfere with growth to promote a
strong, balanced structure.
Trees that
are identified as in need of pruning during the inspection process will have a
blue mark on them.
Removal
If a tree
is diseased or damaged to the extent that it is past saving, the team will cut it
down. Starting in 2026, trees that are targeted for felling will have a pink mark on them.
Tree
inspection and maintenance are essential to keeping residents safe, preventing
damage and increasing the urban canopy.
Timeframe
Please expect a certain delay between inspection of a tree and any subsequent pruning or removal work.
