UPDATE Torrential rain: August 17, 1 p.m.

We are aware that the precipitation forecast for the next few days may cause concern among the population of Rosemerites. The Town of Rosemère would like to assure you that its municipal teams and Fire Safety Department will be closely monitoring the situation to intervene quickly if necessary.

What's more, in these uncertain times, a good ear can be the best way to vent the emotions that overwhelm us. Don't hesitate to ask for help from Info-Social, by dialing 811, option 2.

Preparing your home

Being proactive and concentrating on what needs to be done on your property is the best strategy for dealing with bad weather. During heavy rains, a home is likely to suffer water damage such as infiltration, equipment breakdown or sewer backup. To help you minimize the risk of such infiltration, we suggest the following actions:

Sump pump

A sump pump can play an important role in pumping infiltrated water from French drains to the surface and away from the house during heavy rainfall. Submersible pumps are available from hardware stores and specialized plumbing supply stores.

How can you protect yourself against breakdowns or power failures?

  • Make sure you have a battery-powered pump;
  • Check once a year :

                o General condition and age of the pump;

                o General condition and age of marine battery;

  • Have a back-up pump in case the existing pump stops working;
  • Have an alarm that beeps in case the pump doesn't work.

Backflow preventer valves

The non-return valve is a simple device that allows water to flow in only one direction, towards municipal facilities. A non-return valve has an inclined flap that closes when water attempts to flow in the opposite direction, protecting your home.

These devices provide effective protection against backflow. They must be installed on all secondary plumbing connections below the natural ground level, including the basement floor drain.

Maintenance

  • Ensure permanent access to the valve;
  • Examine the valve regularly and remove any debris that could prevent it from working properly.

Don't hesitate to consult a qualified plumber to make sure this equipment is working properly.

Recommendations before and during an episode of torrential rain

  • Reduce as much as possible the consumption of drinking water that is discharged into the already overloaded network;
  • Make sure your equipment is in good working order and have a 2nd back-up pump;
  • Remove all valuables from the basement or place them in an elevated position;
  • Avoid leaving your home to ensure that your equipment is working properly.

Finally, we remind you that we are monitoring the situation and will communicate any updates via our communication platforms.
