How to Obtain a Permit to Cut Down a Tree
All applications for permission to cut down a tree must be submitted online to the Urban Planning Department. Before submitting your application, please be sure to clearly mark the tree or trees in question with tape on your property and include photos and a location map with your online application to facilitate the review of your case.

What are the eligibility requirements?
Permission may be granted, in particular, when:
- the tree is dead or is irreversibly dying;
- the tree is afflicted with an incurable disease;
- the tree is infested and poses a risk of spreading the infestation to other trees;
- the tree poses a danger to the safety of people or property, and no other measures can remedy the situation;
- the tree is causing serious damage to a building or infrastructure;
- felling is necessary for the completion of a construction or development project authorized by the Town, when no other solution that would allow the tree to be preserved is possible.
Inadmissible Reasons
The following are not valid reasons for authorizing the felling of a tree:
- the falling of leaves, flowers, fruit, or small branches;
- the presence of roots on the ground surface;
- the presence of insects or animals;
- the shade cast by the tree;
- odors, sap, resin, or pollen;
- aesthetic considerations;
- the desire to simply replace the tree with another one.
Depending on the circumstances, the Town may require the planting of a replacement tree or the implementation of a compensatory measure in accordance with applicable regulations.
