Fire Prevention Week: “You’re the one responsible!”

From October 4 to 10, the Town of Rosemère is marking Fire Prevention Week by offering, in partnership with the Blainville Fire Department, practical tips to prevent fires and ensure your safety.

Each year in Quebec, fires damage an average of 4,951 homes, injure 308 people and force 27,000 people to evacuate. Nearly 48% of fires in homes are linked to distraction or human error.

Electrical appliances and electrical distribution equipment cause more than 23% of residential building fires.

To reduce the risk of an electrical fire, the Government of Quebec recommends that you:

  • Hire a licensed master electrician for any electrical work;
  • Use appliances bearing a certification mark recognized in Canada, such as CSA or ULC;
  • Avoid overloading electrical outlets;
  • Follow the manufacturer’s minimum clearance requirements;
  • Replace damaged or worn appliances, and never modify them;
  • A working smoke alarm is essential for early warning if a fire breaks out. Make sure yours is properly located and maintained according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
