Reconstruction Work on the Île Belair Bridge in Rosemère Comes to an End

A major step forward in the Town’s Active Mobility Project

The Town of Rosemère is proud to announce the completion of the reconstruction of the Île Bélair bridge, an important milestone in the project to build a bicycle path along Labelle Boulevard. The new multiuse, two-way, 28.5-metre-long facility marks a first and significant step forward in the large-scale development project aimed at improving active mobility at the regional level.

Rosemère would like to thank the Gouvernement du Québec and the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal (CMM) for their contribution of $246,485, split equally between the two in connection with the Trame verte et bleue du Grand Montréal. The Town’s own investment amounts to $123,242.

The reconstruction project involved replacing the bridge with a structure that was almost entirely prefabricated off-site and adding a multiuse path connecting to the Town’s existing paths to give users a safe way to access the broader active transportation network. The innovative approach meant fewer impacts on road users and the adjacent community, specifically with regard to the number and duration of traffic obstructions.

This project is in keeping with the Town of Rosemère’s commitment to promoting active and sustainable transportation, improving the connectivity between various neighbourhoods and providing greater access to natural areas. This new multiuse path along the Île Belair bridge will be part of the CMM’s Réseau vélo métropolitain, the goal of which is to build a comprehensive network of bicycle paths throughout Greater Montreal.

Good for residents, good for the planet

During the public consultations held between 2018 and 2020 on the Town of Rosemère’s urban vision, residents clearly expressed a desire to prioritize active transportation. In response, the Town rolled out its Active Mobility Project to meet these needs and honour its sustainable development and environmental stewardship commitments.

Quotes

“This new multiuse path is a perfect fit with the Trame verte et bleue du Grand Montréal: it will help increase active mobility and make it easier for people to get to the Parc de la Rivière-des-Mille-Îles. It’s a wonderful example of collaboration in action to build a more sustainable and more connected urban environment,” said Valérie Plante, Mayor of Montréal and Chair of the CMM.

“The reconstruction of the Île Bélair bridge brings us that much closer to a well-integrated, cohesive mobility system. Our thanks go out to everyone for their patience while the roadwork was underway,” said Rosemère Mayor Eric Westram.

Further development efforts will be ongoing in the coming months. The Town will keep the public informed of the next steps in this extensive project.
