Renovations to the H.J. Hemens Public Library

The H.J. Hemens Public Library will be closing temporarily between August and November while major renovations are being carried out. The building, which was constructed in 1978, requires several upgrades to ensure its durability and performance. The project will see the heating and air-conditioning systems, flooring, roof, insulation, wiring, plumbing, ventilation and cladding replaced. The operation is one of the initiatives outlined in the 2024–2030 strategic plan to “adapt municipal buildings to the needs of users,” which falls under the aspiration “Modernize our infrastructure.” The total project investment amounts to $2.5 million.

Satellite library

Starting August 4 and until renovations wrap up, the Town will make a satellite library available at Memorial Community Centre to continue to serve the public and fulfil the library’s mission of providing access to information and supporting cultural and community activities. The entrance to the satellite library will be located at the back of the centre, located at 202 Grande-Côte Road.

Extended borrowing privileges

Starting July 1 and continuing until August 2, users can check out up to 50 items and keep them while the renovations are underway. Borrowing conditions will vary depending on the type of asset in question (new releases, periodicals, video games, etc.). As soon as the satellite location opens on August 4, however, all regular book loan policies will resume. All items borrowed under these special privileges can be returned to the library during its standard operating hours.

Rosemerites can learn more about this exclusive arrangement at the circulation desk of H.J. Hemens Public Library. Additional information and a set of frequently asked questions can be found in the library catalogue at biblio.ville.rosemere.qc.ca/renovation

“This work will allow us to pursue our commitment to excellence through this iconic community landmark. The library is a beloved Rosemère institution, where there were 75,000 visits and 150,000 items borrowed last year alone. It plays a central role in Rosemère’s cultural and community life. The work will help ensure the building’s long-term viability and comply with sustainability standards while still preserving our unique small-town charm. We look forward to seeing everyone back there in the fall,” said Rosemère Mayor Eric Westram.
